Sin City (2005), directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller, written by Frank Miller.
Sin City was great fun. Saw it on the big screen. Bit of a case of style over substance, but what great style! It’s basically like watching a moving comic book on-screen. It’s made up of three stories, which are connected in the sense that they occur in the same town and some characters are seen in the shots of alternate stories, but the stories are not connected in the Pulp Fiction style.
If this movie stays a one-off, it will be fantastic. Let’s hope that Hollywood doesn’t start to do every comic adaptation like this. That would be sad, although it would be typical of Hollywood. The movie has an awesome cast, music is fairly low key, and it’s full of great noir conventions. Noticed a Vertigo and a Suspiria reference in there; sure there were others too. Anyway not sure that this movie would hold up to repeated viewings, and not sure about seeing it on the small screen, but its definitely worth seeing. Unlike anything produced thus far.
Oh, and Elijah Wood’s character – creepy as man!

Sin City is coming to DVD here in the States in a couple of days. I didn't get to see it in theaters, but I wanted to buy the DVD. A special edition is supposed to come in December, so I'd rather hold out for that. But I will be Netflixing it, and hopefully it will be here on the release date.
I'm glad you liked it, though. It only makes me more excited to see it now.
